Imagine living with a disease that’s poorly understood, with little-to-no research funding because not enough people have it. That’s exactly what’s happening to those struggling with Ménière’s disease.
But, thanks to an app commissioned by the University of Exeter (and built by the Buzz team), clinicians, researchers, and those affected by it are learning more than ever before.
A complex multifactorial disease exhibiting vertigo, tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss, Ménière’s only affects a small percentage of the population, meaning its aetiology and disease impact is little known. But, with the launch of this project, the University of Exeter changed things up, with the help of Buzz’s experienced developers.
Our team’s job? To build a bespoke app that would allow clinicians and researchers alike to understand more about common triggers, as well as helping participants to document their own journeys.
From monitoring daily symptoms (including imbalance, headaches, vomiting and fatigue), to third-party app integration - plus the ability to link with the wider community - nailing down the much-needed features through our Discovery Phase was key to success.
The end result was a nifty app that could easily collect data, allowing clinicians and researchers alike to build a better understanding of the disease - the first steps in changing the lives of those suffering with it.
The best part? Data from the app has not only provided robust evidence for a correlation with the weather, as well as stress, in frequency of debilitating attacks, but participants have also been able to monitor and identify their own individual triggers, too.
The work doesn’t stop and the Meniere’s Monitor app has been continually developed and improved over time to become a powerful tool in Meniere’s research.
There are so few resources for us suffering from MD. This is awesome, just that someone is even doing something about it!
